• Why did you decide to volunteer?
I was always passionate about injustices in Australia and overseas. I live a healthy life in a developed country so I feel I have an obligation to contribute to helping those less fortunate.
• Why did you choose the organisation you are volunteering with?
I have always been interested in international aid and development. I choose to be a part of Oaktree as I share the same values and beliefs. I agree with the Oaktree Foundation that by empowering young people though education we can build a sustainable future.
• How often do you volunteer?
I normally commit about 8 hours per week for meetings, preparation as well as another 2 hours running Generate sessions where I train University students about aid and development issues. However during Oaktree campaigns I will often get more involved.
• Is volunteering good for your social life?
Yes, volunteer organisations are generally made up of passionate like-minded people. I have met so many great people who I often spend time with outside of Oaktree.
• Have you had to undergo any additional training?
I have had extensive training from the Oaktree foundation. They provide training in campaigning, advocacy, leadership, and political engagement. On top of this I have received specific education training for my role in Generate.
• What are the benefits of volunteering?
There are many benefits of volunteering. It helps you develop great personal skills as well as leaderships and teamwork qualities. However the giving back to the community and having a positive influence in people’s lives is really the greatest benefit of volunteering.
• How has volunteering assisted your professional development as a student paramedic?
Volunteering for Oaktree has taught me a lot about teamwork. I have had to develop communication skills, which are very relevant as a paramedic. Additionally Oaktree has given me life experience that is relevant to my professional development.
• What is the most rewarding experience you have had volunteering?
Successfully lobbying the Australian Government at Parliament House to increase the international aid they provide.
• Why would you recommend volunteering to other student paramedics?
It is a great way to use your skills and enthusiasm to give something back to the community and the world. It can be an amazing experience and you will make great friends.
