Student Paramedic Undergraduates (SPU)

SPU'ians UNITE...

S.P.U. (Student Paramedic Undergraduates) is a student association for QUT student paramedics studying at Kelvin Grove Campus in Brisbane. We provide student paramedics with professional and social networking, academic support and peer discussion.

Informally, we are here to help, whether it be clinical or personal. We create a friendship group that has the opportunity to form many bonds. As this year began, and to use the most verbalised word of 2011, QLD was INUNDATED with flood waters, devastating many homes. Up to 15 people, all of SPU heritage, patrolled the streets of West End as the “spirit group” shovelling mud from some dudes women’s fashion store. A few days later, a fellow SPU member’s house had to be taken apart and cleaned. SPU members...more, friends, jumped in and did some dirty work, gratefully paid in hugs and cupcakes at the end! SPU founder, former president and newly qualified, the honorable Daniel Townson, travelled and worked tirelessly through the Brisbane Flooding, then posted up North, and cyclone Yasi came to pay him a visit for all his hard work. These, some of the unseen benefits of SPU.

So get in, get involved and get your hands dirty!

SPU O-WEEK 2011

What turned out to be an 'awesome' day almost was a complete shambles when the School of health lecture finished early and they started the paramedic-focused lecture before it was supposed to. It was almost finished by the original starting time, but fortunately Tim our head lecturer gave us a call and we ran to the lecture room just in time, hearts pumping, but we made it!

CoCo Giddings from the SPA executive committee gave a great presentation, explaining the advantages of being part of ACAP, now Paramedics Australasia (PA), and SPA. This was followed by some vital SPU info on social and educational aspects of the society.

We are proud to announce that two of our committee members were awarded 'dux' of 1st and 2nd year in 2010, and our founder Daniel Townson received the School of Public Health leadership award, highly saught after i hear!

We had a mad slide show of photos from past years. We had tours of the grounds to show students the locations of important buildings, and this was very successfully finished off by an epic BBQ and everyone received one of the cool little badges we made! (scroll down for pictures)

Good times topped off by a casual debrief and we said our sad goodbyes to CoCo! Was a great day. Market days followed the next week with SPU setting up a stall and we had a great turn out after 2 days signing almost 110 members! Great Start. I think this year will be a successful one for SPU, with many good events planned. A lot of us are looking forward to the SPA and PA conferences, but the SPA one especially!!!
